In this website, I will examine the homeless population of Skid Row located in Los Angeles, California by which the black male inhabitants have been subject to environmental racism by means of policing strategies and political pawns. After an analysis of the history of Skid Row, it can be clear that preexisting racism and the desire for assimilation have perpetuated the inhumane conditions and treatment that homeless people endure. Furthermore, exploring the demographics of this area is crucial to the understanding of Skid Row and what can be done to better the living conditions here. This region is surely an example of environmental injustice and there cannot be such justice without housing justice, healthcare justice, and equitable justice. The interconnectedness of government, drugs, crime, people flowing in and out of shelter, and race, especially in this essay, is a matter at hand worthy of exploration, remediation, compensation, and reformation. In this essay, I will implore how this section of Los Angeles was created, and how containment is a driving factor of the lack of progress in Skid Row.
